Number Forty-Seven

Carla cuts her hand. She washes dishes at home. She goes to the clinic. She gets a number: forty-seven.

カルラは手を切ります。家で皿を洗います。診療所へ行きます。番号をもらいます。四十七番です。

The screen shows thirty-one. The room is full. A man reads a magazine. A father holds a baby. A teenager looks at his phone.

画面には三十一と出ています。待合室はいっぱいです。男性が雑誌を読んでいます。父親が赤ちゃんを抱いています。十代の若者がスマートフォンを見ています。

The numbers change slowly: thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-six. They do not go in order. Carla waits.

番号はゆっくり変わります。三十二、三十三、三十六。順番どおりではありません。カルラは待ちます。

After one hour, the screen shows forty-seven. Carla goes in. The doctor looks at her hand. "It is small," he says. "Clean it two times a day."

一時間後、画面に四十七と出ます。カルラは中に入ります。医師は彼女の手を見ます。"小さいですね"と彼は言います。"一日に二回、消毒してください"

Carla leaves. The room is almost empty. The teenager is gone. The baby is awake.

カルラは診療所を出ます。待合室はほとんど空です。十代の若者はもういません。赤ちゃんは目を覚ましています。
