Number Forty-Seven

Carla cuts her hand. She washes dishes at home. She goes to the clinic. She gets a number: forty-seven.

Carla si taglia la mano. Lava i piatti a casa. Va alla clinica. Riceve un numero: quarantasette.

The screen shows thirty-one. The room is full. A man reads a magazine. A father holds a baby. A teenager looks at his phone.

Lo schermo mostra trentuno. La sala è piena. Un uomo legge una rivista. Un padre tiene in braccio un bambino. Un adolescente guarda il telefono.

The numbers change slowly: thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-six. They do not go in order. Carla waits.

I numeri cambiano lentamente: trentadue, trentatré, trentasei. Non vanno in ordine. Carla aspetta.

After one hour, the screen shows forty-seven. Carla goes in. The doctor looks at her hand. "It is small," he says. "Clean it two times a day."

Dopo un'ora, lo schermo mostra quarantasette. Carla entra. Il dottore guarda la sua mano. "È piccola," dice. "Puliscila due volte al giorno."

Carla leaves. The room is almost empty. The teenager is gone. The baby is awake.

Carla se ne va. La sala è quasi vuota. L'adolescente non c'è più. Il bambino è sveglio.
