Number Forty-Seven

Carla cuts her hand. She washes dishes at home. She goes to the clinic. She gets a number: forty-seven.

تجرح كارلا يدها. تغسل الأطباق في البيت. تذهب إلى العيادة. تأخذ رقما: سبعة وأربعون.

The screen shows thirty-one. The room is full. A man reads a magazine. A father holds a baby. A teenager looks at his phone.

تعرض الشاشة الرقم واحد وثلاثين. الغرفة ممتلئة. رجل يقرأ مجلة. أب يحمل طفلا رضيعا. مراهق ينظر إلى هاتفه.

The numbers change slowly: thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-six. They do not go in order. Carla waits.

تتغير الأرقام ببطء: اثنان وثلاثون، ثلاثة وثلاثون، ستة وثلاثون. لا تسير بالترتيب. تنتظر كارلا.

After one hour, the screen shows forty-seven. Carla goes in. The doctor looks at her hand. "It is small," he says. "Clean it two times a day."

بعد ساعة واحدة، تعرض الشاشة سبعة وأربعين. تدخل كارلا. ينظر الطبيب إلى يدها. يقول: "الجرح صغير. نظفيه مرتين في اليوم."

Carla leaves. The room is almost empty. The teenager is gone. The baby is awake.

تغادر كارلا. الغرفة شبه فارغة. المراهق رحل. الطفل الرضيع مستيقظ.
