Riding With Ranger Tomas

Polly woke up on the bus at sunrise. A ranger in brown was opening his office. His name was Tomas. He smiled at her. "Come ride with me."

Polly se réveilla dans le bus au lever du soleil. Un ranger en uniforme marron ouvrait son bureau. Il s'appelait Tomas. Il lui sourit. "Viens faire un tour avec moi."

Polly rode in his truck. Tomas had been a ranger for fourteen years. He drove slowly. He stopped often.

Polly monta dans son camion. Tomas était ranger depuis quatorze ans. Il conduisait lentement. Il s'arrêtait souvent.

The first stop was a wet meadow. Tomas looked for bear signs. "In June, corn lilies grow here. Bears eat them."

Le premier arrêt fut une prairie humide. Tomas cherchait des signes de présence d'ours. "En juin, les lys de maïs poussent ici. Les ours les mangent."

Polly hopped to the window. The corn lilies were small green spears.

Polly se pencha à la fenêtre. Les lys de maïs étaient de petites pointes vertes.

The truck climbed. The air got cooler. At a turn in the road, Tomas pointed. A peregrine falcon sat on a rock. Polly looked at it. The falcon dropped off the rock and was gone.

Le camion montait. L'air devenait plus frais. À un virage de la route, Tomas montra du doigt. Un faucon pèlerin était posé sur un rocher. Polly le regarda. Le faucon quitta le rocher et disparut.

"Falcons nest on the cliffs," Tomas said. "We have six pairs this year."

Polly watched how the falcon folded its wings to dive. She wanted to try it.

Polly observa comment le faucon repliait ses ailes pour plonger. Elle voulait essayer.

Later, Tomas walked into the woods. He came back with a metal can. "Someone tried to bury this bear-proof box."

At noon they reached Olmsted Point. Polly saw a big view. Tenaya Lake far below. Half Dome from behind. Grey mountains in the distance.

À midi, ils atteignirent le point de vue d'Olmsted. Polly vit un vaste panorama. Le lac Tenaya bien en dessous. Le Half Dome de derrière. Des montagnes grises au loin.

"Most people drive past this," Tomas said. He poured a little coffee in his cup. He set the cup on the dashboard. "Stay a while."
