与护林员托马斯同行

波莉在日出时醒来，发现自己在公交车上。一个穿着棕色制服的护林员正在打开他的办公室。他的名字叫托马斯。他对她微笑，说：“来和我一起坐车吧。”

Polly woke up on the bus at sunrise. A ranger in brown was opening his office. His name was Tomas. He smiled at her. "Come ride with me."

波莉坐上了他的卡车。托马斯已经当了十四年的护林员。他开得很慢，经常停下来。

Polly rode in his truck. Tomas had been a ranger for fourteen years. He drove slowly. He stopped often.

第一站是一个湿润的草地。托马斯在寻找熊的踪迹。“六月的时候，这里会长出玉簪花。熊会吃它们。”

The first stop was a wet meadow. Tomas looked for bear signs. "In June, corn lilies grow here. Bears eat them."

Polly hopped to the window. The corn lilies were small green spears.

卡车继续爬坡，空气变得凉爽。在一个路口，托马斯指了指。一只游隼停在岩石上。波莉看着它。游隼从岩石上跃下，消失不见了。

The truck climbed. The air got cooler. At a turn in the road, Tomas pointed. A peregrine falcon sat on a rock. Polly looked at it. The falcon dropped off the rock and was gone.

“游隼在悬崖上筑巢，”托马斯说。“今年我们有六对。”

"Falcons nest on the cliffs," Tomas said. "We have six pairs this year."

波莉观察着游隼如何收拢翅膀俯冲。她也想试试。

Polly watched how the falcon folded its wings to dive. She wanted to try it.

后来，托马斯走进树林。他回来时手里拿着一个金属罐。“有人试图埋掉这个防熊箱。”

Later, Tomas walked into the woods. He came back with a metal can. "Someone tried to bury this bear-proof box."

中午时，他们到达了奥姆斯特德观景点。波莉看到了广阔的景色。远处的特纳亚湖。半圆顶从后面露出。灰色的山脉在远方。

At noon they reached Olmsted Point. Polly saw a big view. Tenaya Lake far below. Half Dome from behind. Grey mountains in the distance.

“大多数人都开车经过这里，”托马斯说。他在杯子里倒了一点咖啡，把杯子放在仪表盘上。“待一会儿吧。”

"Most people drive past this," Tomas said. He poured a little coffee in his cup. He set the cup on the dashboard. "Stay a while."
