O Anel de Brodgar fica numa faixa estreita de terra entre dois lagos. As pedras formam um círculo com cerca de cento e quatro metros de diâmetro. Foi aberto um fosso à volta dele, na rocha maciça. Foi construído há quatro mil a quatro mil e quinhentos anos. Faz parte de um sítio património mundial.
Houve cerca de sessenta pedras. Hoje estão de pé trinta e seis. Os vazios fazem tanta parte da forma como as pedras. Polly deu a volta ao anel por fora, com urze pelos joelhos e a luz a espalhar-se sobre a água. Nada ali foi disposto para um visitante.
Depois veio o assunto banal de partir. No escritório do porto havia um corvo-marinho atrás de um balcão. "A que horas parte o ferry?", perguntou Polly. "Quanto custa isto?" Olhou para a folha impressa com ele. "Queria comprar um bilhete, por favor."
"Quanto tempo demora a travessia?", perguntou por fim. Guardou o bilhete. De manhã, o barco saiu ao largo do mesmo promontório baixo, e as ilhas foram ficando para trás uma a uma.
