Der Ring of Brodgar liegt auf einem schmalen Landstreifen zwischen zwei Seen. Die Steine stehen in einem Kreis von etwa hundertvier Metern Durchmesser. Um ihn herum wurde ein Graben in den gewachsenen Fels gehauen. Er wurde vor viertausend bis viertausendfünfhundert Jahren gebaut. Er gehört zu einer Welterbestätte.
Einst waren es etwa sechzig Steine. Sechsunddreißig stehen heute noch. Die Lücken gehören genauso zur Form wie die Steine. Polly ging außen um den Ring herum, das Heidekraut bis zu den Knien und das Licht flach über dem Wasser. Nichts daran war für einen Besucher eingerichtet.
Dann kam das gewöhnliche Geschäft des Abreisens. Im Hafenbüro saß ein Kormoran hinter einem Tresen. "Wann fährt die Fähre ab?", fragte Polly. "Wie viel kostet das?" Sie sah mit ihm auf das gedruckte Blatt. "Ich möchte bitte ein Ticket kaufen."
"Wie lange dauert die Überfahrt?", fragte sie zuletzt. Sie steckte das Ticket weg. Am Morgen fuhr das Schiff an derselben flachen Landzunge vorbei hinaus, und die Inseln sanken dahinter weg, eine nach der anderen.
