잠든 사이 국경을 건너는 호텔

한 나라에서 잠들었다가 다른 나라에서 눈을 뜨게 되는 호텔이 있다. 이름하여 야간열차이며, 유럽에는 아직 이런 열차가 여럿 남아 있다. 해 질 무렵 어느 웅장한 도시 역에서 올라타 옷장만 한 크기의 객실을 찾아가면, 접이식 침대와 작은 사다리가 있고, 자정 무렵이면 플랫폼이 뒤로 스르르 멀어진다.

There exists a hotel in which you fall asleep in one country and surface in another. It goes by the name of the night train, and Europe still runs plenty of them. You board at dusk in some grand city station, find your cabin, no larger than a wardrobe, with its fold down bed and its small ladder, and around midnight the platform slips away behind you.

제대로 한번 그려 보자. 신발은 침대 아래에서 기다리고, 승차권은 베개 옆 주머니에 끼워져 있으며, 객차 전체가 마치 배처럼 부드럽게 흔들린다. 커튼 틈으로 밤의 조각들이 스쳐 지나간다. 불 켜진 농가 한 채, 너무 빨리 지나가 읽을 수 없는 역 이름, 저 멀리 산의 검은 어깨. 어느 순간 국경이 알아채지 못한 채 발아래로 지나가고, 그 국경을 넘는 동안 사람은 잠들어 있다.

Picture it properly. Your shoes wait beneath the bed, your ticket sits tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole compartment sways gently, as a boat might. Through the gap in the curtain, fragments of the night appear: a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too quickly to read, the black shoulders of distant mountains. At some point a border slides beneath you unnoticed, and you sleep through the crossing.

아침이 되면 승무원이 커피와 따뜻한 빵을 들고 문을 두드리고, 블라인드를 올리면 전혀 다른 세상이 펼쳐진다. 눈이 산봉우리마다 왕관처럼 얹혀 있고, 안개가 골짜기마다 고여 있으며, 소들은 한 번도 재촉받은 적 없는 짐승 특유의 느긋한 태도로 풀을 뜯는다. 수도의 도시에서 잠들었다가 알프스를 그린 엽서 속에서 눈을 뜬 셈이다. 공항도, 줄도, 잃어버린 짐도 없다. 그저 아주 유능한 엔진을 단 침대 하나뿐이다.

Come morning, an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you raise the blind on a different world. Snow crowns the peaks, mist pools in the valleys, and cattle graze with the unhurried air of creatures that have never been rushed. You went to bed in a capital city and woke inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no misplaced luggage. Just a bed fitted with a very capable engine.
