ドイツの黒い森では、人々が木で美しい時計を作ります。これは「鳩時計」と呼ばれます。上手な職人が、手でそれを彫ります。暗い木に、小さな葉や鳥や家が彫られています。一つの時計に時間と手間がかかります。同じ時計は二つとありません。時計は壁にかかり、一日中静かに音を立てます。
そして、特別なことが起こります。一時間ごとに、時計の上の小さなドアが開きます。木でできた小さな鳥が出てきて、「クックー、クックー」と鳴きます。二つの音が部屋に響きます。鳴いたあと、ドアはまた閉まります。家はまた静かになります。鳥は中で、次の時間を待ちます。
子供たちは、ドアが開くのを見るのが大好きです。じっと座って、時計をじっと見ます。鳥が出てくると、みんな喜んで笑います。黒い森では、この技術はとても古く、みんなに愛されています。親は子供にこの技術を教えます。時計を作る技は、次の世代へと受け継がれていきます。
