この町は、まるごと室内で暮らしている。近所づきあいに文句を言う人に、ぜひ教えてあげてほしい。アラスカの、寒くて灰色をした入り江のほとりに、ウィッティアという町がある。そこでは、住民のほとんどが同じ一棟の建物に暮らしているのだ。
その建物は十四階建てで、はるか昔に軍のために建てられたものだ。今では、アパート、商店、郵便局、警察署、小さな診療所、そして教会まで入っている。町長も、医者も、牛乳を売る店の人も、みんな上下の階に住んでいるのだ。雪が降ると, , そしてこの町では雪がたっぷり降る, , 誰も外に出る必要がない。子どもたちは、地下のトンネルを通って学校へ行く。
町に入るのは、もっと不思議だ。車は山をまっすぐくり抜いた、たった一本の狭いトンネルを通ってくる。しかもそのトンネルは列車とも共有していて、みんな順番に通らなければならない。夜になるとトンネルは閉まり、誰も出入りできなくなる。町はただ、そこにとどまり続ける。あたたかく、明かりのともった一棟の高い建物が、雪の中、山々に囲まれて立っている。
