È, in fondo, un problema di cronometraggio travestito da mappa.
Ecco il dettaglio scomodo. Quegli orologi non scandiscono il tempo allo stesso ritmo di quello al tuo polso. Più lontano dalla massa del pianeta, il tempo scorre leggermente più veloce; muoversi a grande velocità in orbita tira il ritmo nella direzione opposta. I due effetti non si annullano a vicenda, e i satelliti finiscono per guadagnare circa trentotto milionesimi di secondo ogni giorno.
Sembra un'inezia. Non lo è. La luce percorre circa trenta centimetri in un miliardesimo di secondo, quindi un errore non corretto di questa entità si accumula fino a circa dieci chilometri di scarto di posizione al giorno. Il tuo puntino blu se ne andrebbe fuori strada, poi fuori città, prima ancora di cena. Gli orologi vengono perciò costruiti, deliberatamente, per scandire il tempo al ritmo sbagliato quando sono a terra, in modo che arrivino a quello giusto una volta raggiunta l'orbita.
