A new study of more than eleven thousand recorded calls found that young chimpanzees in different parts of Africa sound different, and the gap grows as they age.

Schimpansen haben regionale Dialekte. Schick das allen, die behaupten, Tiere machten nur Lärm. Forscher berichten gerade, dass junge Schimpansen in verschiedenen Teilen Afrikas nicht gleich klingen und dass der Abstand zwischen ihnen größer wird, je älter die Tiere werden.
Das Team ging mehr als elftausend aufgenommene Rufe von Säuglingen und Jungtieren an zwei getrennten Orten durch, einer eine Auffangstation in Sambia, der andere ein Nationalpark in Tansania. Sie sortierten die Laute in Grunzen, Wimmern und Lachen und maßen sie dann. Die jüngsten Tiere klangen überall ähnlich. Die älteren nicht. Jede Gruppe war zu ihrer eigenen Art des Grunzens abgedriftet.
Genau dieses Abdriften ist das Spannende, denn man hielt Schimpansenrufe lange für angeboren, also für etwas, das im Tier steht und nicht bei den Nachbarn abgeschaut wird. Wenn ein junger Schimpanse stattdessen den Klang seiner Gruppe aufnimmt, so wie ein Kind die Vokale seiner Straße aufsaugt, dann könnte der Dialekt eine viel ältere Gewohnheit sein, als bisher jemand behaupten wollte.
