El equipo revisó más de once mil llamadas grabadas de crías y jóvenes en dos lugares separados: un centro de rescate en Zambia y un parque nacional en Tanzania. Clasificaron los sonidos en gruñidos, gemidos y risas, y después los midieron. Los más pequeños sonaban bastante parecido vivieran donde vivieran. Los mayores no. Cada grupo había derivado hacia su propia manera de gruñir.
Esa deriva es lo interesante, porque durante mucho tiempo se dio por hecho que las llamadas de los chimpancés eran fijas desde el nacimiento, escritas en el animal y no aprendidas de los vecinos. Si en cambio un chimpancé joven absorbe el sonido del grupo que lo rodea, igual que un niño se empapa de las vocales de su calle, entonces el acento puede ser una costumbre mucho más antigua de lo que nadie se atrevía a decir.
