У шимпанзе є регіональні акценти. Надішли це кожному, хто наполягає, що тварини лише видають шум. Науковці щойно повідомили, що молоді шимпанзе, які живуть у різних частинах Африки, звучать по-різному, і що з віком ця різниця між ними лише зростає.
Команда прослухала понад одинадцять тисяч записаних звуків від малят і підлітків у двох окремих місцях: одному рятувальному центрі в Замбії й одному національному парку в Танзанії. Вони розподілили звуки на рохкання, скиглення й сміх, а потім виміряли їх. Наймолодші тварини звучали більш-менш однаково, де б вони не жили. Старші вже ні. Кожна група поступово виробила власну особливу манеру рохкати.
Саме ці зміни найцікавіші, бо довгий час вважалося, що звуки шимпанзе закладені від народження, вписані в тварину, а не переймаються від сусідів. Якщо ж молодий шимпанзе натомість вбирає звучання групи навколо себе, так само як дитина вбирає голосні звуки своєї вулиці, то акцент може виявитися значно давнішою звичкою, ніж хтось наважувався стверджувати.
