Two Brand New Animals, Each the Size of a Fingernail

Scientists just discovered two animals nobody had ever named. Tag a friend who thinks every species on Earth has already been found. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers searching limestone cliffs found two tiny snails that turned out to be completely new to science.

वैज्ञानिकों ने अभी दो ऐसे जीव खोजे हैं जिनका नाम पहले कभी नहीं रखा गया था। उस दोस्त को दिखाओ जो सोचता है कि धरती की हर प्रजाति पहले ही खोजी जा चुकी है। मोंटेनेग्रो के पहाड़ों में, चूना पत्थर की चट्टानों की खोज करते हुए शोधकर्ताओं को दो नन्हीं घोंघे मिले जो विज्ञान के लिए बिलकुल नए निकले।

Each snail measures about the width of a fingernail and carries a small cone-shaped shell. Instead of a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that works like a door, sealing the shell shut the moment the snail pulls inside. One of the two species lives only in a narrow canyon that a planned dam could flood before scientists finish studying what else lives there.

हर घोंघा नाखून जितना चौड़ा है और उसके पास एक छोटा शंकु आकार का खोल है। एक साधारण ढक्कन की जगह, हर एक की पूँछ पर एक गोल तश्तरी होती है जो दरवाज़े की तरह काम करती है, जो घोंघे के अंदर घुसते ही खोल को बंद कर देती है। इन दोनों प्रजातियों में से एक सिर्फ़ एक संकरी घाटी में रहती है, जिसे एक प्रस्तावित बाँध डुबो सकता है, इससे पहले कि वैज्ञानिक यह पढ़ाई पूरी कर लें कि वहाँ और क्या क्या रहता है।

The team named the snails after the places where they were found, one after the canyon and one after a high plateau nearby. Researchers say the discovery shows that even in well-mapped parts of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff.

टीम ने घोंघों का नाम उन जगहों पर रखा जहाँ वे मिले, एक का नाम घाटी पर और दूसरे का पास के एक ऊँचे पठार पर। शोधकर्ताओं का कहना है कि यह खोज दिखाती है कि यूरोप के अच्छी तरह नक्शे किए गए हिस्सों में भी, पूरी की पूरी प्रजातियाँ अब भी किसी एक चट्टान पर बिना नाम के इंतज़ार कर सकती हैं।
