Chimpanzees Have Accents

Chimpanzees have regional accents. Send this to whoever insists that animals only make noise. Scientists have just reported that young chimpanzees living in different parts of Africa do not sound the same, and that the distance between them widens as the animals grow up.

침팬지에게도 지역 사투리가 있다. 동물은 그냥 소리만 낸다고 우기는 사람에게 이 이야기를 보내 보라. 과학자들은 최근 아프리카 여러 지역에서 자라는 어린 침팬지들이 서로 다르게 소리를 내며, 그 차이가 자랄수록 더 커진다고 발표했다.

The team went through more than eleven thousand recorded calls from infants and juveniles in two separate places, one a rescue centre in Zambia, the other a national park in Tanzania. They sorted the sounds into grunts, whimpers and laughter, and then measured them. The youngest animals sounded broadly similar wherever they lived. The older ones did not. Each group had drifted towards its own particular way of grunting.

연구팀은 잠비아의 한 보호 센터와 탄자니아의 한 국립공원, 서로 다른 두 곳에 사는 새끼와 어린 침팬지들의 녹음된 소리 만 천 개가 넘는 기록을 살펴보았다. 그들은 소리를 끙끙대는 소리, 낑낑대는 소리, 웃음소리로 나누어 측정했다. 가장 어린 개체들은 어디에 살든 대체로 비슷하게 들렸다. 나이가 든 개체들은 그렇지 않았다. 각 무리는 저마다 특유의 끙끙거리는 방식으로 점점 기울어 갔다.

That drift is the interesting part, because chimpanzee calls were long assumed to be fixed at birth, written into the animal rather than picked up from the neighbours. If a young chimp is instead absorbing the sound of the group around it, the way a child soaks up the vowels of a street, then accent may be a much older habit than anybody was willing to claim.

이 변화가 흥미로운 이유는, 침팬지의 소리가 오랫동안 태어날 때부터 정해져 있으며 주변에서 배우는 것이 아니라 동물 안에 새겨진 것이라고 여겨졌기 때문이다. 만약 어린 침팬지가 아이가 거리의 모음을 빨아들이듯 주변 무리의 소리를 그대로 흡수하는 것이라면, 사투리는 누구도 감히 주장하지 못했던 것보다 훨씬 더 오래된 습성일지도 모른다.
