The Boat Comes In

The morning boat tied up at Stromness. Polly stepped onto wet stone. The wind did not stop. A collie sat on the pier. "Can you show me the way?"

朝の船がストロムネスに着きました。ポリーは濡れた石の上に降りました。風はやみません。桟橋にコリー犬がすわっていました。「道を教えてもらえますか。」

She did not know where to go yet. There are about seventy islands. Only about twenty have people. "Could you tell me where I can catch a bus?" she asked.

ポリーはまだ行き先を決めていません。島は七十ぐらいあります。人がいる島は二十ぐらいです。「バスにはどこで乗れるか教えていただけますか。」とポリーは聞きました。

「町の中心まで歩いてどのくらいかかりますか。」コリー犬は細い道を見ました。十一分だよ、と言いました。

"Can you tell me if there are any interesting events today?" The boat times are the news here, he said. There is a chapel built by prisoners. There is a village under the sand.

「今日、何かおもしろい催しがあるか教えてもらえますか。」船の時間がここのニュースだよ、と犬は言いました。捕虜が建てた礼拝堂があります。砂の下に村があります。
