The Octopus and Its Three Hearts

The octopus is a soft animal that lives in the sea. It has eight arms and no bones. But the most surprising thing is inside its body. The octopus has three hearts, not one.

タコは海に住む柔らかい動物です。腕が八本あります。骨はありません。でも、一番驚くことは体の中にあります。タコには心臓が三つあります。一つではありません。

Two of the hearts push blood to the gills. There the blood takes in oxygen from the water. The third heart then sends this blood to the rest of the body, so the octopus has energy to move.

二つの心臓は血をえらに送ります。そこで血は水から酸素を取ります。三つ目の心臓は、その血を体の他の部分に送ります。それでタコは動く力を持ちます。

The blood of an octopus is blue, not red. It is blue because it has copper inside. This special blood helps the octopus live in cold, deep water. When the octopus swims, its main heart stops, so it likes to walk on the sea floor instead.

タコの血は青いです。赤くありません。血の中に銅があるので、青いのです。この特別な血は、冷たくて深い水でタコが生きるのを助けます。タコが泳ぐとき、大きい心臓は止まります。だから、タコは海の底を歩くほうが好きです。
