Der Oktopus und seine drei Herzen

Der Oktopus ist ein weiches Tier, das im Meer lebt. Er hat acht Arme und keine Knochen. Aber das Überraschendste steckt in seinem Körper: Der Oktopus hat nicht ein Herz, sondern drei.

The octopus is a soft animal that lives in the sea. It has eight arms and no bones. But the most surprising thing is inside its body. The octopus has three hearts, not one.

Zwei der Herzen pumpen Blut zu den Kiemen. Dort nimmt das Blut Sauerstoff aus dem Wasser auf. Das dritte Herz schickt dieses Blut dann in den Rest des Körpers, damit der Oktopus Energie zum Bewegen hat.

Two of the hearts push blood to the gills. There the blood takes in oxygen from the water. The third heart then sends this blood to the rest of the body, so the octopus has energy to move.

Das Blut eines Oktopus ist blau, nicht rot. Es ist blau, weil es Kupfer enthält. Dieses besondere Blut hilft dem Oktopus, in kaltem, tiefem Wasser zu leben. Wenn der Oktopus schwimmt, hört sein Hauptherz auf zu schlagen – deshalb läuft er lieber auf dem Meeresboden entlang.

The blood of an octopus is blue, not red. It is blue because it has copper inside. This special blood helps the octopus live in cold, deep water. When the octopus swims, its main heart stops, so it likes to walk on the sea floor instead.
