نوعان لم يسمهما أحد، عُثر عليهما على جرف صخري

حدد علماء نوعين من الحيوانات لم يُسميا من قبل قط. ففي جبال الجبل الأسود، عثر باحثون كانوا يمشطون جروفا كلسية على حلزونين متناهيي الصغر تبين، عند الفحص، أنهما جديدان على العلم.

Scientists have identified two animals never before named. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers combing limestone cliffs came across two minuscule snails that turned out, on inspection, to be new to science.

ويبلغ حجم كل حلزون عرض ظفر تقريبا، ويحمل صدفة صغيرة مخروطية الشكل مصممة لحياة تُقضى محشورة في شقوق ضيقة داخل الصخر. وبدلا من غطاء بسيط، يملك كل حلزون قرصا مستديرا في ذيله يعمل كباب صغير، يغلق الصدفة في اللحظة التي ينسحب فيها الحيوان إلى الداخل. ولا يعيش أحد هذين النوعين إلا داخل واد ضيق واحد قد يغمره سد مخطط له قبل أن ينتهي الباحثون من تصنيف كل ما يعيش هناك أيضا، من دون أن يراه أحد، على الجروف نفسها.

Each snail measures roughly the width of a fingernail and carries a small, cone-shaped shell built for a life spent wedged into narrow cracks in the rock. Rather than a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that functions like a tiny door, sealing the shell shut the instant the animal withdraws inside. One of the two species survives only within a single narrow canyon that a planned dam could submerge before researchers finish cataloguing whatever else lives there, unseen, on the same cliffs.

وأطلق الفريق على الحلزونين اسمي المكانين اللذين عُثر عليهما فيهما: أحدهما باسم الوادي نفسه، والآخر باسم هضبة مرتفعة قريبة. ويشير الباحثون إلى أن هذا الاكتشاف يبين كيف يمكن، حتى في أركان أوروبا المدروسة جيدا، أن تظل أنواع كاملة بانتظار من يسميها، على جرف صخري واحد.

The team named the two snails after the very places where they were found: one after the canyon itself, the other after a nearby high plateau. Researchers note that the discovery shows how, even in well-mapped corners of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff face.
