고도 십 킬로미터 위에서

장거리 비행 중 창밖을 내다보면 지상은 약 십 킬로미터 아래에 놓여 있고, 들판과 구름이 뒤섞인 조각보처럼 보인다. 그러나 항공사가 그 고도를 선택하는 이유는 풍경이 아무리 장관이라 해도 그 때문이 아니다. 그 위의 공기가 희박해서 비행기가 그 사이를 통과하는 데 놀랄 만큼 적은 비용이 들기 때문이다.

Glance out of the window on a long flight and the earth sits some ten kilometres beneath you, reduced to a patchwork of fields and cloud. Airlines do not choose that altitude for the view, however spectacular it happens to be. They choose it because the air up there is thin, and thin air is remarkably cheap to fly through.

지상 근처의 공기는 밀도가 높아서, 그 속으로 비행기를 미는 일은 수영하는 사람이 물속을 헤쳐 나가는 것과 비슷하다. 나아가는 매 미터마다 에너지가 든다. 십 킬로미터 위에서는 공기가 상당히 희박해져서 비행기가 훨씬 적은 저항을 받으며 미끄러지듯 나아가고, 그 결과 같은 속도를 유지하는 데 엔진이 눈에 띄게 적은 연료를 태운다. 희박한 공기에는 또 다른 이점도 있다. 대부분의 폭풍과 난기류, 두꺼운 구름은 그 고도보다 훨씬 아래에 머물러 있어서, 그 위에서의 비행이 훨씬 부드러운 이유이기도 하다.

Near the ground, air is dense, and pushing a plane through it is rather like a swimmer wading through water: every metre travelled costs energy. Ten kilometres up, the air has thinned considerably, so the aircraft slips through it with far less resistance, which means the engines burn noticeably less fuel to hold the same speed. Thin air offers a second advantage too: most storms, turbulence, and heavy cloud sit well below that height, which is why the ride up there tends to be so much smoother.

그렇다고 한계가 없는 것은 아니다. 너무 높이 오르면 공기가 너무 희박해져서 날개가 충분한 양력을 만들어 내지 못하거나 엔진이 필요한 산소를 끌어들이지 못한다. 그래서 항공사는 대개 십 킬로미터에서 십이 킬로미터 사이라는 좁은 최적점을 노린다. 연료비를 아낄 만큼 높으면서도 비행기가 계속 날 수 있을 만큼은 낮은 구간이다. 이 조용한 절충은 좌석벨트 표시등이 꺼질 때마다 거의 눈에 띄지 않게 이루어지고 있다.

There is, inevitably, a limit. Climb too high, and the air becomes too thin either for the wings to generate enough lift or for the engines to draw the oxygen they need. Airlines therefore aim for a narrow sweet spot, generally between ten and twelve kilometres: high enough to spare the fuel bill, low enough to keep the aircraft flying at all. That quiet trade off is being made, almost invisibly, every single time your seatbelt sign switches off.
