Zece kilometri mai sus

Aruncă o privire pe fereastră într-un zbor lung și pământul se află la vreo zece kilometri sub tine, redus la un mozaic de câmpuri și nori. Companiile aeriene nu aleg acea altitudine pentru priveliște, oricât de spectaculoasă ar fi aceasta. O aleg pentru că aerul de acolo este rarefiat, iar aerul rarefiat este remarcabil de ieftin de străbătut.

Glance out of the window on a long flight and the earth sits some ten kilometres beneath you, reduced to a patchwork of fields and cloud. Airlines do not choose that altitude for the view, however spectacular it happens to be. They choose it because the air up there is thin, and thin air is remarkably cheap to fly through.

Aproape de sol, aerul este dens, iar a împinge un avion prin el seamănă destul de mult cu un înotător care se mișcă prin apă: fiecare metru parcurs costă energie. La zece kilometri înălțime, aerul s-a rarefiat considerabil, astfel încât aeronava alunecă prin el cu mult mai puțină rezistență, ceea ce înseamnă că motoarele ard vizibil mai puțin combustibil pentru a menține aceeași viteză. Aerul rarefiat oferă și un al doilea avantaj: majoritatea furtunilor, turbulențelor și norilor deși se află mult mai jos de acea înălțime, motiv pentru care zborul de acolo tinde să fie mult mai lin.

Near the ground, air is dense, and pushing a plane through it is rather like a swimmer wading through water: every metre travelled costs energy. Ten kilometres up, the air has thinned considerably, so the aircraft slips through it with far less resistance, which means the engines burn noticeably less fuel to hold the same speed. Thin air offers a second advantage too: most storms, turbulence, and heavy cloud sit well below that height, which is why the ride up there tends to be so much smoother.

Există, inevitabil, o limită. Dacă urci prea sus, aerul devine prea rarefiat fie pentru ca aripile să genereze suficientă portanță, fie pentru ca motoarele să tragă oxigenul de care au nevoie. De aceea, companiile aeriene vizează un interval restrâns, în general între zece și doisprezece kilometri: suficient de sus pentru a economisi la combustibil, suficient de jos pentru a menține aeronava în zbor. Acest compromis discret se face, aproape invizibil, de fiecare dată când se stinge semnul pentru centura de siguranță.

There is, inevitably, a limit. Climb too high, and the air becomes too thin either for the wings to generate enough lift or for the engines to draw the oxygen they need. Airlines therefore aim for a narrow sweet spot, generally between ten and twelve kilometres: high enough to spare the fuel bill, low enough to keep the aircraft flying at all. That quiet trade off is being made, almost invisibly, every single time your seatbelt sign switches off.
