Gli animali dipinti delle rocce rosse

Oggi Polly vola fuori dalla città, nella foresta. Qui le rocce non sono rosa ma di un rosso profondo. Vento e pioggia le hanno rese rotonde e lisce, come onde di pietra tra i pini. Uno scoiattolo rosso le fa cadere una pigna in testa. È il suo modo di dire ciao.

Today Polly flies out of the town, into the forest. Here the rocks are not pink but deep red. Wind and rain have made them round and smooth, like waves of stone between the pine trees. A red squirrel drops a pine cone on her head. It is her way of saying hello.

Lo scoiattolo porta Polly a un basso riparo di roccia. Sulla pietra rossa ci sono delle pitture. Vede cervi con grandi corna e capre selvatiche che saltano. I colori ora sono vecchi e tenui, ma gli animali sembrano ancora vivi.

The squirrel takes Polly to a low rock shelter. On the red stone there are paintings. She sees deer with big antlers and wild goats that jump. The colors are old and soft now, but the animals still look alive.

Le persone hanno dipinto questi animali migliaia di anni fa. Oggi le pitture sono protette come patrimonio dell'umanità. Polly trova un uccello dipinto con le ali aperte. Lo guarda a lungo. Un uccello dipinto da mani umane, tanti anni fa.

People painted these animals thousands of years ago. Today the paintings are protected as world heritage. Polly finds a painted bird with open wings. She looks at it for a very long time. A bird painted by careful human hands, so very many years ago.

Di sera le rocce rosse brillano come fuoco. Un cervo vero esce dalla foresta, si guarda intorno e sparisce di nuovo. Le pitture e la foresta raccontano ancora la stessa storia, pensa Polly.

In the evening the red rocks glow like fire. A real deer steps out of the forest, looks around, and disappears again. The paintings and the forest still tell the same story, Polly thinks.
