Hoy Polly vuela fuera del pueblo, hacia el bosque. Aquí las rocas no son rosadas sino de un rojo profundo. El viento y la lluvia las han hecho redondas y lisas, como olas de piedra entre los pinos. Una ardilla roja le deja caer una piña en la cabeza. Es su manera de decir hola.
La ardilla lleva a Polly a un abrigo bajo la roca. Sobre la piedra roja hay pinturas. Ve ciervos con cuernas grandes y cabras que saltan. Los colores ahora son viejos y suaves, pero los animales todavía parecen vivos.
La gente pintó estos animales hace miles de años. Hoy las pinturas están protegidas como patrimonio mundial. Polly encuentra un pájaro pintado con las alas abiertas. Lo mira durante mucho tiempo. Un pájaro pintado por manos humanas cuidadosas, hace tantos y tantos años.
Por la tarde las rocas rojas brillan como fuego. Un ciervo de verdad sale del bosque, mira alrededor y desaparece otra vez. Las pinturas y el bosque todavía cuentan la misma historia, piensa Polly.
