Nel cuore di Seul, c'è un fiume che ha passato mezzo secolo nell'oscurità. Il torrente Cheonggyecheon scorreva liberamente attraverso il centro della città, ma nei decenni dopo la guerra divenne inquinato e circondato da baracche, così la città lo seppellì. Il cemento coprì l'acqua e negli anni '70 un'autostrada sopraelevata ruggiva sopra il cemento. Il fiume divenne una leggenda sotto il traffico.
Poi, nel 2003, Seul fece qualcosa che sembrava quasi un passo indietro: iniziò a demolire l'autostrada per riportare alla luce il fiume. Gli ingegneri rimossero le strade, restaurarono quasi sei chilometri del torrente e costruirono passerelle, pietre su cui camminare e ponti lungo le rive. I critici dicevano che la città stava distruggendo infrastrutture utili per una decorazione. Il progetto andò avanti comunque, e il torrente fu riaperto nel 2005.
I risultati sorpresero persino gli ottimisti. Pesci, uccelli e insetti tornarono in un'acqua che non aveva visto la luce del sole da cinquant'anni. Le temperature estive lungo il torrente erano di diversi gradi più fresche rispetto alle strade parallele vicine, un condizionatore naturale che attraversava la parte più densa della città. Oggi milioni di persone camminano lungo le rive ogni anno, molti di loro troppo giovani per ricordare che il loro posto preferito a Seul era una volta il sottopassaggio di un'autostrada.
