Oben auf dem Hügel war die Burg. Lange Steinmauern liefen neben einem trockenen Graben. Darüber war eine flache grüne Fläche. Polly lief oben auf einer Mauer entlang.
Die Dächer hier sind weiß. Sie sind aus Blei. Altes Blei sieht in der Sonne weiß aus. Die Leute sagen: Im Krieg konnte man das Dach zu Kugeln schmelzen.
Die Mauern zeigen viele Arten von Steinarbeit. Manche Steine sind rau. Manche sind quadratisch und sehr eng. Manche bilden ein Muster. Die alten Fürsten hier waren sehr reich. Sie bezahlten auch für Schönheit.
Die Burg brannte mehr als einmal. Das meiste wurde nach alten Plänen neu gebaut. Ein Tor ist älter. Polly saß auf seinem blassen Dach.
