The Hotel That Crosses Borders While You Sleep

There exists a hotel in which you fall asleep in one country and surface in another. It goes by the name of the night train, and Europe still runs plenty of them. You board at dusk in some grand city station, find your cabin, no larger than a wardrobe, with its fold down bed and its small ladder, and around midnight the platform slips away behind you.

Er bestaat een hotel waarin je in het ene land in slaap valt en in het andere weer opduikt. Het gaat door het leven als de nachttrein, en Europa laat er nog volop rijden. Je stapt in de schemering op een of ander groots stadsstation, vindt je coupé, niet groter dan een kledingkast, met een uitklapbed en een klein trapje, en rond middernacht glijdt het perron achter je weg.

Picture it properly. Your shoes wait beneath the bed, your ticket sits tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole compartment sways gently, as a boat might. Through the gap in the curtain, fragments of the night appear: a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too quickly to read, the black shoulders of distant mountains. At some point a border slides beneath you unnoticed, and you sleep through the crossing.

Stel het je goed voor. Je schoenen wachten onder het bed, je kaartje zit weggestoken in het zakje naast het kussen, en de hele coupé wiegt zachtjes, als een boot. Door de kier in het gordijn verschijnen flarden van de nacht: een verlichte boerderij, een stationsnaam die te snel voorbijflitst om te lezen, de zwarte schouders van verre bergen. Ergens glijdt er onopgemerkt een grens onder je door, en je slaapt de oversteek gewoon door.

Come morning, an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you raise the blind on a different world. Snow crowns the peaks, mist pools in the valleys, and cattle graze with the unhurried air of creatures that have never been rushed. You went to bed in a capital city and woke inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no misplaced luggage. Just a bed fitted with a very capable engine.

's Ochtends klopt een conducteur aan met koffie en warme broodjes, en je trekt het rolgordijn op voor een andere wereld. Sneeuw kroont de toppen, mist verzamelt zich in de dalen, en vee graast met de ongehaaste kalmte van dieren die nooit haast hebben gekend. Je ging naar bed in een hoofdstad en werd wakker in een ansichtkaart van de Alpen. Geen luchthaven, geen rij, geen zoekgeraakte bagage. Gewoon een bed met een heel capabele motor eronder.
