The Hotel That Crosses Borders While You Sleep

There exists a hotel in which you fall asleep in one country and surface in another. It goes by the name of the night train, and Europe still runs plenty of them. You board at dusk in some grand city station, find your cabin, no larger than a wardrobe, with its fold down bed and its small ladder, and around midnight the platform slips away behind you.

On monte à la tombée du jour dans quelque grande gare, on trouve sa cabine, guère plus large qu'une armoire, avec son lit rabattable et sa petite échelle, et vers minuit le quai s'efface derrière soi.

Picture it properly. Your shoes wait beneath the bed, your ticket sits tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole compartment sways gently, as a boat might. Through the gap in the curtain, fragments of the night appear: a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too quickly to read, the black shoulders of distant mountains. At some point a border slides beneath you unnoticed, and you sleep through the crossing.

Imaginez la scène avec précision. Tes chaussures attendent sous le lit, ton billet est glissé dans la poche près de l'oreiller, et tout le compartiment se balance doucement, comme le ferait un bateau. Par l'interstice du rideau, des fragments de la nuit apparaissent : une ferme éclairée, un nom de gare qui défile trop vite pour être lu, les épaules noires de montagnes lointaines. À un moment donné, une frontière glisse sous toi sans que tu t'en aperçoives, et tu dors pendant la traversée.

Come morning, an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you raise the blind on a different world. Snow crowns the peaks, mist pools in the valleys, and cattle graze with the unhurried air of creatures that have never been rushed. You went to bed in a capital city and woke inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no misplaced luggage. Just a bed fitted with a very capable engine.

Au matin, un contrôleur frappe avec du café et des petits pains chauds, et tu relèves le store sur un monde différent. La neige couronne les sommets, la brume s'attarde dans les vallées, et le bétail broute avec l'air paisible de créatures qui n'ont jamais connu la hâte. Tu es allé te coucher dans une capitale et tu t'es réveillé dans une carte postale des Alpes. Pas d'aéroport, pas de file d'attente, pas de bagage égaré. Juste un lit équipé d'un moteur particulièrement compétent.
