The Town That Lives In One Building

This whole town lives indoors. Send this to the person who complains about their neighbours. In Alaska, on a cold grey bay, there is a town called Whittier, and almost everyone in it lives in the same building.

Essa cidade inteira vive dentro de casa. Envie isso para quem reclama dos vizinhos. No Alasca, numa baía fria e cinzenta, existe uma cidade chamada Whittier, e quase todo mundo ali mora no mesmo prédio.

The building is fourteen floors high and was built for the army long ago. Now it holds flats, a shop, a post office, a police station, a small clinic and a church. The mayor, the doctor and the person who sells you milk all live upstairs from each other. When it snows, and it snows a great deal, nobody has to go outside at all. The children reach the school through a tunnel under the ground.

O prédio tem catorze andares e foi construído para o exército muito tempo atrás. Hoje abriga apartamentos, uma loja, um correio, uma delegacia, uma clínica pequena e uma igreja. O prefeito, o médico e a pessoa que vende leite moram todos um em cima do outro. Quando neva, e neva muito, ninguém precisa sair de casa. As crianças chegam à escola por um túnel debaixo do chão.

Getting into the town is stranger still. Cars come in through one narrow tunnel cut straight through a mountain, and that tunnel is shared with trains, so everybody takes turns. At night it closes and nobody drives in or out. The town simply stays where it is, warm and lit, one tall building standing in the snow with mountains all around it.

Entrar na cidade é ainda mais estranho. Os carros passam por um único túnel estreito, aberto direto dentro de uma montanha, e esse túnel é compartilhado com trens, então todo mundo espera sua vez. À noite ele fecha e ninguém entra nem sai de carro. A cidade simplesmente fica onde está, quente e iluminada, um único prédio alto de pé na neve, cercado de montanhas por todos os lados.
