The Town That Lives In One Building

This whole town lives indoors. Send this to the person who complains about their neighbours. In Alaska, on a cold grey bay, there is a town called Whittier, and almost everyone in it lives in the same building.

Questa città intera vive al chiuso. Manda questo a chi si lamenta sempre dei vicini. In Alaska, su una baia fredda e grigia, c'è una cittadina che si chiama Whittier, e quasi tutti i suoi abitanti vivono nello stesso palazzo.

The building is fourteen floors high and was built for the army long ago. Now it holds flats, a shop, a post office, a police station, a small clinic and a church. The mayor, the doctor and the person who sells you milk all live upstairs from each other. When it snows, and it snows a great deal, nobody has to go outside at all. The children reach the school through a tunnel under the ground.

Il palazzo ha quattordici piani e fu costruito per l'esercito molto tempo fa. Oggi contiene appartamenti, un negozio, un ufficio postale, una stazione di polizia, un piccolo ambulatorio e una chiesa. Il sindaco, il medico e la persona che ti vende il latte abitano uno sopra l'altro. Quando nevica, e qui nevica moltissimo, nessuno deve uscire. I bambini arrivano a scuola attraverso un tunnel sotto terra.

Getting into the town is stranger still. Cars come in through one narrow tunnel cut straight through a mountain, and that tunnel is shared with trains, so everybody takes turns. At night it closes and nobody drives in or out. The town simply stays where it is, warm and lit, one tall building standing in the snow with mountains all around it.

Entrare in città è ancora più strano. Le auto passano per un solo tunnel stretto scavato dritto dentro una montagna, e quel tunnel è condiviso con i treni, così tutti fanno a turno. Di notte chiude e nessuno entra né esce. La città resta semplicemente dov'è, calda e illuminata, un solo palazzo alto in mezzo alla neve con le montagne tutt'intorno.
