The Village Under the Storm

"Can you tell me how to get there?" Polly asked at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the sheep said. The village sits behind a bay of pale sand.

"Pode dizer-me como se chega lá?", perguntou Polly ao pequeno-almoço. Siga a estrada da costa para oeste, disse a ovelha. A aldeia fica atrás de uma baía de areia clara.

An oystercatcher was at the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. Then sand covered the village.

Um ostraceiro estava no sítio. Polly perguntou: "Gostava de saber a história deste monumento." Viveu aqui gente há cinco mil anos, disse ele. Depois a areia cobriu a aldeia.

The wind took half his words. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house is the same inside. A fire in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone shelf on the wall.

O vento levou metade das palavras dele. "Pode repetir, por favor?", pediu Polly. Todas as casas são iguais por dentro. Uma lareira ao meio. Camas de cada lado. Uma prateleira de pedra na parede.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She looked into one room for a long time.

"Pode dizer-me se o museu está aberto amanhã?", perguntou Polly. Sabia que ia voltar. Ficou muito tempo a olhar para uma divisão.
