The Village Under the Storm

"Can you tell me how to get there?" Polly asked at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the sheep said. The village sits behind a bay of pale sand.

"Kunt u mij vertellen hoe ik daar kom?" vroeg Polly bij het ontbijt. Volg de kustweg naar het westen, zei het schaap. Het dorp ligt achter een baai met bleek zand.

An oystercatcher was at the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. Then sand covered the village.

Er was een scholekster op de vindplaats. Polly vroeg: "Ik zou graag de geschiedenis van dit specifieke monument willen weten." Hier woonden vijfduizend jaar geleden mensen, zei hij. Toen bedekte het zand het dorp.

The wind took half his words. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house is the same inside. A fire in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone shelf on the wall.

De wind nam de helft van zijn woorden mee. "Zou u dat voor mij kunnen herhalen?" vroeg Polly. Elk huis is vanbinnen hetzelfde. Een vuur in het midden. Bedden aan weerszijden. Een stenen plank aan de muur.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She looked into one room for a long time.

"Kunt u mij vertellen of het museum morgen open is?" vroeg Polly. Ze wist dat ze terug zou komen. Ze keek lang naar een van de kamers.
