The Village Under the Storm

"Can you tell me how to get there?" Polly asked at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the sheep said. The village sits behind a bay of pale sand.

"Pouvez-vous me dire comment m'y rendre ?" a demandé Polly au petit déjeuner. Suivez la route côtière vers l'ouest, a dit la brebis. Le village est derrière une baie de sable pâle.

An oystercatcher was at the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. Then sand covered the village.

Un huîtrier pie était sur le site. Polly a demandé : "J'aimerais connaître l'histoire de ce monument en particulier." Des gens ont vécu ici il y a cinq mille ans, a-t-il dit. Puis le sable a couvert le village.

The wind took half his words. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house is the same inside. A fire in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone shelf on the wall.

Le vent a emporté la moitié de ses mots. "Pourriez-vous répéter cela, s'il vous plaît ?" a demandé Polly. Chaque maison est pareille à l'intérieur. Un feu au milieu. Des lits de chaque côté. Une étagère de pierre au mur.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She looked into one room for a long time.

"Pourriez-vous me dire si le musée est ouvert demain ?" a demandé Polly. Elle savait qu'elle reviendrait. Elle a regardé une pièce pendant longtemps.
