폴리, 버스를 타다

버스는 오래된 엽서 같은 색으로 도착했고, 운전대 앞에는 같은 노선을 몇 년째 돌면서도 여전히 그 일을 좋아하는 이의 여유를 지닌 카피바라가 앉아 있었다. “이 버스 시내에 가요? 중앙 광장에 가야 해요.” 카피바라가 어찌나 천천히 고개를 끄덕이는지, 그 끄덕임 자체가 안심이 되었다. 문이 초대장처럼 접히며 열렸다.

The bus arrived painted the color of an old postcard, and at the wheel sat a capybara with the calm of someone who has driven the same loop for years and still likes it. "Does this bus go downtown? I need the main square." The capybara nodded so slowly that the nod itself was reassuring, and the doors folded open like an invitation.

“표 한 장 주세요. 이 노선은 처음이에요.” 처음이라는 말이야말로 카피바라의 전문 분야였다. “얼마예요? 오늘은 동전밖에 없어요.” 동전이 하나씩 통에 떨어지는 동안, 버스는 조급한 소리 한 번 내지 않고 기다렸다. 폴리는 창가 자리를 골라, 동네가 저절로 정리되는 모습을 바라보았다. 시장, 모퉁이 카페, 그리고 다들 방향을 잘못 트는 그 분수.

"One ticket, please. It is my first time on this line." First times were the capybara's specialty. "How much is it? I only have coins today." The coins were counted into the tray one by one while the bus waited without a single impatient sound. Polly chose a window seat and watched the neighborhood reorganize itself: the market from rung to rung, the corner cafe, the fountain where everyone turns wrong.

“중앙 광장에 가려면 어디에서 내려요?” 날개는 이미 빨간 버튼 위에 떠 있었고, 그때 카피바라가 한쪽 귀를 뒤로 기울였다. “다음 정류장이군요! 좋아요, 문 쪽으로 갈게요.” 광장이 나타났다. 넓고, 의견이 많은 비둘기들로 가득했다. “기다려 주셔서 감사합니다! 나중에 봐요!” 문이 접히며 닫히고, 엽서는 계속 굴러갔다. 폴리는 새 도시 한가운데 서서 처음으로, 집으로 가는 길을 아는 사람이 된 기분이었다.

"Where do I get off for the main square?" A wing was already hovering over the red button when the capybara tilted an ear backward. "The next stop! Perfect, I am on my way to the door." The square appeared, wide and full of pigeons with opinions. "Thank you for your patience! See you later!" The doors folded shut, the postcard rolled on, and Polly stood in the middle of the new city feeling, for the first time, like someone who knew the way home.
