폴리, 길을 묻다

폴리에게는 지도가 관광객이나 보는 것이라는 이론이 있었는데, 그 이론은 정확히 이십 분 동안만 버텼다. 동네 거리는 손으로 그린 것처럼 구불구불했고, 모든 모퉁이에서 똑같은 빵집 냄새가 났으며, 도서관은 끝내 나타나지 않았다. 모퉁이에는 신문을 접어 든 올빼미가 서 있었다. 올빼미만이 할 수 있는 방식으로 선 채 읽는 중이었다. “실례합니다, 뭐 좀 여쭤볼게요. 길을 잃은 것 같아요.”

Polly had a theory that maps were for tourists, and the theory lasted exactly twenty minutes. The streets of the neighborhood curved like they were drawn freehand, every corner had the same bakery smell, and the library refused to appear. On a corner stood an owl with a folded newspaper, reading standing up the way only owls can. "Excuse me, one question. I think I am lost."

올빼미는 어마어마한 인내심으로 신문을 내렸다. “도서관이 어디예요? 아까부터 같은 자리를 맴돌고 있어요.” 멀지 않다고 올빼미가 설명했다. 문제는 분수였다. 다들 분수에서 반대쪽으로 돈다는 것이었다. “분수에서 오른쪽이에요, 왼쪽이에요?” 왼쪽, 언제나 왼쪽, 그다음에는 광장까지 그저 거리뿐이었다. “광장까지 쭉 가면 되는군요! 쉬워 보이네요.”

The owl lowered the newspaper with enormous patience. "Where is the library? I have been going in circles." It was not far, the owl explained; the problem was the fountain. Everyone turned the wrong way at the fountain. "To the right or to the left at the fountain?" Left, always left, and then nothing but street until the square. "Straight ahead until the square, okay! That sounds easy."

누군가 소리 내어 말해 주니 정말로 쉬웠다. 도서관은 광장 뒤에서, 넓은 계단과 활짝 열린 문과 함께 나타났다. 처음부터 줄곧 있던 바로 그 자리에서. “정말 감사합니다! 덕분에 오후를 살렸어요.” 올빼미는 다음 장에서 눈을 떼지 않은 채 신문을 흔들어 보였다. 폴리는 새로운 이론을 하나 안고 계단을 올라갔다. 두 지점 사이의 가장 짧은 거리는 좋은 질문이다.

It was easy, once someone said it out loud. The library appeared behind the square with its wide steps and its doors open, exactly where it had been all along. "Thank you very much! You have saved my afternoon." The owl waved the newspaper without looking up from the next page. Polly climbed the steps with a new theory: the shortest distance between two points is a good question.
