La città nell'abbraccio del fiume

Polly segue un fiume tra le colline secche dell'est della Spagna. Il fiume gira a sinistra e a destra tra rocce alte. Poi fa un grande giro, come un braccio che tiene qualcosa. Dentro il giro c'è una città. Le sue case rosa salgono la collina in file, una sopra l'altra.

Polly follows a river through dry hills in the east of Spain. The river turns left and right between high rocks. Then it makes one big loop, like an arm holding something. Inside the loop there is a town. Its pink houses climb the hill in rows, one above the other.

La città si chiama Albarracín. Qui vivono solo circa mille persone. Le case sono rosa e arancioni, con balconi di legno sopra le strade strette. In alto, sopra i tetti, un muro di pietra sale sulla montagna. Sembra troppo grande per una città così piccola.

The town is called Albarracín. Only about a thousand people live here. The houses are pink and orange, with wooden balconies that hang over the narrow streets. High above the roofs, a stone wall climbs up the mountain. It looks much too big for such a small town.

Polly vola sopra i tetti e atterra nella piazza principale. È molto piccola, quasi come una stanza. In un angolo c'è una piccola fontana. Da una porta aperta arriva il profumo di pane fresco. Lontano, sulle montagne, sente un campanaccio.

Polly flies over the roofs and lands in the main square. It is very small, almost like a room. There is a little fountain in one corner. She smells fresh bread coming from an open door. Far away, up in the mountains, she hears a sheep bell.

Il sole tramonta e le lampade si accendono. I muri rosa ora sembrano caldi, come l'ultima luce di un fuoco. Polly si siede sulla fontana e guarda tutto. Domani esplorerà le strade. Stanotte la piccola città si addormenta nell'abbraccio del fiume.

The sun goes down and the lamps come on. The pink walls now look warm, like the last light of a fire. Polly sits on the fountain and watches it all. Tomorrow she will explore the streets. Tonight the little town goes to sleep inside the river's arm.
