The City That Uncovered a River

In the middle of Seoul, there is a river that spent half a century in the dark. The Cheonggyecheon stream once ran openly through the heart of the city, but in the decades after the war it became polluted and crowded with shacks, so the city buried it. Concrete went over the water, and by the 1970s an elevated highway roared above the concrete. The river became a rumour underneath the traffic.

O riacho Cheonggyecheon corria abertamente pelo coração da cidade, mas nas décadas depois da guerra ficou poluído e cercado de barracos, então a cidade o enterrou. Concreto cobriu a água, e, na década de setenta, uma rodovia elevada passou a rugir sobre o concreto. O rio virou um rumor por baixo do trânsito.

Then, in 2003, Seoul did something that seemed almost backwards: it began demolishing the highway to dig the river back out. Engineers removed the roads, restored almost six kilometres of the stream, and built walkways, stepping stones, and bridges along the banks. Critics said the city was destroying useful infrastructure for a decoration. The project pressed on anyway, and the stream reopened in 2005.

Então, em dois mil e três, Seul fez algo que parecia quase ao contrário: começou a demolir a rodovia para desenterrar o rio. Engenheiros removeram as vias, restauraram quase seis quilômetros do riacho e construíram passarelas, pedras de passagem e pontes ao longo das margens. Críticos diziam que a cidade estava destruindo uma infraestrutura útil por uma decoração. O projeto seguiu em frente mesmo assim, e o riacho reabriu em dois mil e cinco.

The results surprised even the optimists. Fish, birds, and insects returned to water that had not seen sunlight in fifty years. Summer temperatures along the stream measured several degrees cooler than on the parallel roads nearby, a natural air conditioner running through the densest part of the city. Today millions of people walk the banks every year, many of them too young to remember that their favourite place in Seoul was once the underside of a highway.

Os resultados surpreenderam até os mais otimistas. Peixes, pássaros e insetos voltaram a uma água que não via luz do sol havia cinquenta anos. As temperaturas de verão ao longo do riacho ficavam vários graus mais frescas do que nas ruas paralelas próximas, um ar-condicionado natural funcionando bem no meio da parte mais densa da cidade. Hoje, milhões de pessoas caminham pelas margens todos os anos, muitas delas jovens demais para lembrar que o lugar favorito delas em Seul já foi o subsolo de uma rodovia.
