En su última mañana, Polly sube a la torre vigía una vez más. Berta ya está allí. Es extraño, porque Berta odia escalar. Alguien tiene que comprobar el amanecer, dice la garduña. Se sientan juntas en las piedras viejas y miran.
La primera luz toca la torre. Después baja por la muralla y pasa sobre los tejados. Durante unos minutos, todo el pueblo brilla en rosa y oro. Lejos, en los prados, Polly oye las campanillas de las ovejas. Abajo, el río sostiene el pueblo en su curva, como siempre.
Berta dice que no le gustan las despedidas. Después se despide de todos modos. Le da a Polly un higo seco para el viaje. A un pueblo así no le importa cuando te vas, dice. Irse es la primera mitad de volver.
Polly vuela desde la torre y sigue el río por la garganta. Detrás de ella, el pueblo rosado se hace más y más pequeño. Guarda el higo para más tarde. Lo comerá lejos, cuando quiera recordar este lugar.
