Семь юбок и серебряные рыбки

На третий день Полли пошла в город. Она ехала на фуникулёре. Это маленький поезд. Он едет вверх и вниз по скале. Полли сидела внутри и смотрела на красные крыши.

On day three Polly went down to the town. She rode the funicular, a small train that goes up and down the cliff. Polly sat inside and watched the red roofs.

Пляж был полон деревянных стоек. На стойках лежали серебряные рыбки. Они сушились на солнце. Это старая традиция здесь.

The beach was full of wooden racks. On the racks were many small silver fish. They were drying in the sun. This is an old tradition here.

Женщины-чайки переворачивали рыбок с заботой. Каждая женщина носила семь юбок, одну на другой. Семь юбок, как семь дней недели.

Gull ladies turned the fish with care. Each lady wore seven skirts, one on top of another. Seven skirts, like the seven days of the week.

Вечером Полли вернулась к своему красному фонарю. Волны были выше, чем вчера. Теперь она тоже могла их слышать.

In the evening Polly went back to her red lantern. The waves were taller than yesterday. Now she could hear them too.
