海の底を歩く

北海の沿岸には、ヴァッテン海と呼ばれる、奇妙で美しい海岸線が広がっており、そこでは海そのものが一日に二度、気を変えるように見える。毎朝、そしてまた毎夕、海水は数キロメートルにわたって引いていき、海底を空の下にさらけ出す。歩く人々はその縁に集まり、靴を脱いで、ほんの数時間前までは海の底だった場所へと足を踏み出していく。

Along the North Sea coast lies a strange and beautiful stretch of coastline known as the Wattenmeer, where the sea itself seems to change its mind twice a day. Each morning and again each afternoon, the water withdraws for kilometres, laying the seabed bare beneath the open sky. Walkers gather at its edge, remove their shoes, and step out onto what was, only hours earlier, the floor of the sea.

泥は柔らかく、足元にひんやりと感じられるほど冷たく、一歩ごとにつま先の間から押し上がってくる。干潟は決して空っぽではなく、静かな生き物であふれている。小さな貝殻、走り回るカニ、そして湿った地面にゴカイが残していく渦巻き状の跡。ガイドは絶えず時間を確認しながら、一行を遠く離れた島へと導いていく。むき出しになった海底は本当の意味で与えられたものではなく、ほんの数時間だけ海から借りているにすぎないからだ。

The mud is soft and startlingly cool underfoot, squeezing up between the toes with every step. Far from being empty, the flats teem with quiet life: tiny shells, scurrying crabs, and the curling casts that worms leave behind in the wet ground. A guide leads each group towards a distant island, checking the time constantly, for the exposed seabed is never truly given, only lent by the sea for a few short hours at a stretch.

そして必ず潮が変わる。海水はたいていの訪問者が思うよりずっと速く戻ってきて、銀色に光る筋となって干潟を駆け抜けていく。だからこそ、誰もひとりでこの横断に挑もうとはしない。安全な道筋と、それを使える狭い時間の窓を知っているのはガイドだけであり、それがあってこそ、海が静かに自らの底を取り戻すよりずっと前に、それぞれの一行が確かな地面へとたどり着けるのである。

Then, inevitably, the tide turns. The water returns far faster than most visitors expect, racing back across the flats in bright silver lines. This is precisely why nobody attempts the crossing alone. Only the guide knows the safe routes and the narrow windows in which to use them, which is what allows each group to reach firm ground again well before the sea quietly reclaims its floor.
