長いフライト中に飛行機の窓から外を見ると、世界は十キロメートル下にあります。飛行機がそんなに高く飛ぶのは景色を楽しむためではありません。そこは空気が薄く、薄い空気を通るのは安上がりだからです。
地上に近いところでは、空気は濃いです。濃い空気を押し進む飛行機は、水を押し進む泳者のようなものです。毎メートルがエネルギーを消費します。十キロメートル上空では、空気は数倍薄くなります。飛行機は抵抗が少なく滑るように進むので、エンジンは同じ速度を維持するために燃料をずっと少なく消費します。薄い空気にはもう一つの利点があります。ほとんどの雲や嵐、揺れやすい天候はその高さより下にあるので、飛行はよりスムーズになります。
もちろん限界があります。あまりに高くなると、空気が薄すぎて翼が飛行機を支えられなくなり、エンジンも呼吸できなくなります。だから航空会社は、通常十キロメートルから十二キロメートルの間の、燃料を節約できる高さと飛行を維持できる高さのちょうど良いところを目指します。それが、シートベルトサインが消えるたびに静かに行われている計算です。
