Il sole che non tramonta

Nella sua ultima notte, Polly aspettò il buio. Ma il buio non arrivò mai. Qui, in estate, il sole non tramonta davvero. Scende verso il mare, si accende di rosso e oro, e poi risale. A mezzanotte, la terra era ancora luminosa e dorata. Polly decise di non dormire.

On her last night, Polly waited for the dark. But the dark never came. Here in summer, the sun does not really set. It rolls down to the sea, glows red and gold, and then comes back up. At midnight, the land was still bright and golden. Polly decided not to sleep.

Perché succede questo? Quest'isola si trova vicinissima alla cima del mondo. In estate, il sole si abbassa appena. In inverno, succede il contrario. Il sole quasi scompare, e le giornate sono corte e grigie.

Why? This island is very close to the top of the world. In summer, the sun barely goes down. In winter, it is the opposite. The sun almost hides, and the days are short and grey.

Polly volò in alto un'ultima volta. Vide tutta la settimana in un solo sguardo: la valle, i geyser, la lava nuova, il ghiacciaio bianco e le scogliere. Fuoco sotto e ghiaccio sopra.

Polly flew up high one last time. She saw the whole week at once. The valley, the geysers, the new lava, the white glacier, and the cliffs. Fire below and ice on top.

Poi Polly si girò verso il mare aperto. Alle sue spalle, l'Islanda fumava e gelava ancora, splendendo sotto il sole. Stava ancora nascendo.

Then Polly turned out over the sea. Behind her, Iceland was still steaming and freezing, still glowing in the sun. Still being born.
