Dieses Gewürz war früher so viel wert wie sein Gewicht in Gold. Schick das an jemanden, der gern kocht. Safran kommt von einer kleinen violetten Blume, dem Krokus. In jeder Blume gibt es drei dünne rote Fäden, und nur diese zarten Fäden werden benutzt.
Arbeiter müssen jeden Faden von Hand pflücken, früh am Morgen, bevor die Blumen sich in der Sonne öffnen. Man braucht zehntausende Blumen für nur ein Pfund Safran. Über lange Zeit kostete dieses Pfund getrockneter Fäden etwa so viel wie ein Pfund Gold.
Heute kostet Gold viel mehr als Safran, aber Safran bleibt das teuerste Gewürz in jeder Küche der Welt. Eine einzige Prise kann die Farbe und den Geschmack eines ganzen Topfes Reis verändern.
