Polly wachte auf und roch faule Eier. Aber hier gab es keine Küche. Der Geruch kam aus heißen Becken im Boden. Das blaue Wasser war zu heiß zum Anfassen. Polly ging zwischen den Becken. Ihre runde Brille wurde vom Dampf ganz beschlagen.
In der Mitte war ein Geysir. Alle paar Minuten sprang das Wasser hoch in den Himmel. Warum? Das Wasser fließt hinunter zum heißen Stein. Es wird zu Dampf und steigt mit Kraft nach oben. Polly flog über das warme Wasser.
Die Menschen hier nutzen diese Wärme. Das warme Wasser in ihren Häusern kommt aus dem Boden. In warmen Gewächshäusern wachsen Tomaten, sogar Bananen, in diesem kalten Land.
Am Nachmittag fand Polly einen warmen Bach. Sie ließ sich auf dem Rücken treiben. Sie schaute zu den ersten Sternen. Die Erde brummte ganz leise.
