Polly se despertó con un olor a huevos. Pero aquí no había cocina. El olor venía de unas pozas calientes en el suelo. El agua azul estaba demasiado caliente para tocarla. Polly caminó entre las pozas. Sus gafas redondas se empañaron con el vapor.
En el centro había un géiser. Cada pocos minutos, el agua saltaba muy alto al cielo. ¿Por qué? El agua baja hasta la roca caliente. Se convierte en vapor y sube con fuerza. Polly voló por encima del agua tibia.
La gente de aquí usa este calor. El agua caliente de sus casas viene del suelo. Unos invernaderos cálidos cultivan tomates, incluso plátanos, en esta tierra fría.
Por la tarde, Polly encontró un arroyo tibio. Flotó de espaldas. Miró las primeras estrellas. La tierra zumbaba suavemente.
