The Lake That Disappears Every Summer

The ground under the valley is full of holes and tunnels in the rock. In autumn, water drains down through these holes until the valley is dry. In winter, rain and melting snow push back up through the same holes, and the lake fills again, sometimes in just a few days.

Ziemia pod doliną jest pełna dziur i tuneli w skale. Jesienią woda spływa przez te dziury, aż dolina wysycha. Zimą deszcz i topniejący śnieg wypychają wodę z powrotem przez te same dziury, i jezioro znów się napełnia, czasem w ciągu zaledwie kilku dni.

When the water is high, people row boats and watch birds on the lake. When the water is low, farmers walk out and cut hay on the same ground. Old writers wrote about this strange lake two thousand years ago, and it still confuses visitors today.

Kiedy poziom wody jest wysoki, ludzie pływają łódkami i obserwują ptaki na jeziorze. Kiedy poziom wody jest niski, rolnicy wychodzą na tę samą ziemię i koszą siano. Starożytni pisarze pisali o tym dziwnym jeziorze dwa tysiące lat temu, i wciąż dezorientuje ono odwiedzających.
