The Lake That Disappears Every Summer

This lake vanishes on purpose. Send this to a friend who loses things all the time. In Slovenia there is a lake that is not always there. In winter it is one of the biggest lakes in the country. In summer it is gone.

Questo lago sparisce apposta. Manda questo a un amico che perde sempre le cose. In Slovenia c'è un lago che non è sempre lì. In inverno è uno dei laghi più grandi del paese. In estate non c'è più.

The ground under the valley is full of holes and tunnels in the rock. In autumn, water drains down through these holes until the valley is dry. In winter, rain and melting snow push back up through the same holes, and the lake fills again, sometimes in just a few days.

Il terreno sotto la valle è pieno di buchi e gallerie nella roccia. In autunno, l'acqua esce da questi buchi e la valle diventa asciutta. In inverno, la pioggia e la neve che si scioglie salgono di nuovo dagli stessi buchi, e il lago si riempie, a volte in pochi giorni.

When the water is high, people row boats and watch birds on the lake. When the water is low, farmers walk out and cut hay on the same ground. Old writers wrote about this strange lake two thousand years ago, and it still confuses visitors today.

Quando l'acqua è alta, la gente va in barca e guarda gli uccelli sul lago. Quando l'acqua è bassa, i contadini camminano e tagliano il fieno sullo stesso terreno. Scrittori antichi hanno scritto di questo lago strano duemila anni fa, e ancora oggi confonde i visitatori.
