The Harbor's Open Hand
Polly flies into New York Harbor and looks at the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France with metal skin no thicker than two coins.

Polly flew low over the harbor. She saw gray water and ferry boats. Then she saw a big arm ahead. The Statue of Liberty stands on her own island, with a crown and a torch held high.
Up close, the copper skin is thin, no thicker than two coins. It stands on a frame of iron. It is green now, though it was shiny once.
France built the statue and sent it here in pieces. Workers put it together in eighteen eighty-six. It stands three hundred and five feet tall.
Near the statue is a smaller island. Many people once came there by boat to start new lives. Polly flew around once, then toward the tall buildings ahead.
That's the story.
