Your Battery Number Is a Guess

That battery number is a guess. Tag the friend who panics at ten percent. Your phone shows a battery percentage, a clean, exact-looking number sitting right there in the corner of the screen. It feels like a plain fact.

Aquele número da bateria é um palpite. Marca o amigo que entra em pânico aos dez por cento. O teu telemóvel mostra uma percentagem de bateria, um número limpo e certinho ali no canto do ecrã. Parece um facto simples.

It is not a direct measurement. There is no simple way to open up a battery and read how much power is left inside it. Instead, the phone checks the voltage and the flow of electricity moving through the battery, then runs those numbers through a small program that estimates the rest, based on how similar batteries usually behave.

Não é uma medição direta. Não há forma simples de abrir uma bateria e ler quanta energia ainda lá está dentro. Em vez disso, o telemóvel mede a voltagem e a corrente que atravessa a bateria e passa esses valores por um pequeno programa que estima o resto, com base no comportamento habitual de baterias parecidas.

That is why the number can jump around strangely, dropping fast in cold weather or staying stuck at one percent for far longer than expected. The battery itself is not broken. The phone is only guessing, as carefully as it possibly can, and updating its guess every few seconds.

É por isso que o número pode dar saltos estranhos, caindo depressa com frio ou ficando preso num por cento durante muito mais tempo do que seria de esperar. A bateria em si não está avariada. O telemóvel está só a adivinhar, com o maior cuidado possível, e a atualizar o palpite de poucos em poucos segundos.
