The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Polly staat heel vroeg op. Berta wil haar iets bijzonders laten zien. Ze zitten op de muur boven de oude poort en wachten. Dan hoort Polly veel kleine belletjes. Een kudde schapen komt de hoek om en stroomt door de smalle poort.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Achter de schapen loopt een herder met een houten stok en een strohoed. Naast hem loopt een heel grote witte hond, een mastiff. De hond kijkt rustig en ernstig. De schapen kennen de weg. Ze lopen hier al vele jaren elke ochtend.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

Polly vliegt naar beneden en vraagt of zij ook mee mag. De grote hond denkt erover na. Dan geeft hij een klein knikje. Samen lopen ze de berg op, voorbij de laatste huizen, naar de hoge groene weiden boven de kloof.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.

Ze blijven daar de hele dag. De schapen eten gras. De hond slaapt met een oog open. In de avond lopen ze allemaal naar huis. Polly rijdt op de rug van het voorste schaap. Een tijdje hoort ze bij de kudde.
